Create transformative spaces using the
principles of the Wheel of Consent
Â
People who attend our courses often come away feeling changed by the experience. Do you remember how that felt? Are you curious about our secret sauce and how to create it in your group learning spaces?
In this class we will be talking about, experiencing, and guiding you in how to create group learning environments that are inspired by the principles of the Wheel of Consent.Â
The Wheel content itself is rich. But the real magic is in the scaffolding – how we create the container, use clear and invitational language, create spaciousness, provide choice throughout everything, and with these foundational ingredients, layer in the content and the practices.Â
All of these ingredients contribute to the possibility of transformative learning experiences.Â
Learning to weave these principles into your group spaces is an art, and it can be learned. As we say with the model of the Wheel, the best way to teach the Wheel is to embody yourself first. The same goes for the principles – the best way to weave them into your group spaces is to first notice what they are and embody them.Â
In our new and updated version of Working with Groups, you can learn how to apply these principles to your group learning spaces – whether you are hosting a book club, a social gathering, a play space, or a more formal workshop. This workshop is completely reimagined and redesigned from the previous Working with Groups class.
We will be exploring how to integrate the following principles:
Principle 1: Cultivate a clear and spacious container for transformative experiences.
Learn to design learning environments that allow people to show up fully, metabolize their learning edges, and also tend to group cohesion and care. This takes time, and it’s time well spent.
Principle 2: Notice and regulate yourself as a learner (whether a participant or facilitator). Â
Learn to help your students attune to themselves, and help you as the facilitator notice what’s going on for them while also attuning to yourself. All this will help you to be responsive to whatever is happening in the room.
Principle 3: Choice is core to embodied experiences and learning, especially in groups.
You already know that our approach to consent is a full-body, ongoing conversation; and that the choosing is more important than the doing. Learn to embed choice wherever possible so that people are more empowered in their experience.Â
Principle 4: Check yourself moment-to-moment with the questions “What am I doing?” and “Who is it for?”.
As the facilitator, you are in service to the group. These questions will help you make sure that whatever you are doing is for the benefit of the participants. This will allow the work to be dynamic and emergent.Â
Best of all, these principles will enrich your personal and professional life. The more aware you are of the principles, and the more you practice and apply the principles for yourself, the more naturally they'll show up in all your interactions.Â
Â
What you will come away with:
- A more grounded and embodied sense of the principles that underlie the practices of the Wheel of Consent, which will enhance all of the ways you apply the Wheel in your personal and professional life.
- Confidence in framing the various Wheel practices to teach a particular principle; so your group can experience the power of the Wheel without needing to learn all of it.
- A framework for creating and guiding group experiences that are truly transformational.
- Opportunities to be in practice with mentors and peers who have deep knowledge of the Wheel.
- Resources on facilitating group spaces to continue to grow your skills and experience over time.
Â
